ARRIVING AND CONNECTING
Airport Spanish for Mexico: find the next step without guessing
Airports compress signs, numbers, time pressure, and unfamiliar procedures into one place. Keep your flight details visible, ask for one next step, and move any critical number onto the screen or boarding pass.
THE MOMENT
Find one checkpoint at a time
Do not try to explain the whole itinerary at once. Show the flight number or boarding pass, ask the shortest relevant question, and confirm the first place you need to go before moving on.
FOUR LINES TO CARRY
Say it, know it, hear it
¿Dónde está migración?
Where is immigration?Tengo un vuelo de conexión.
I have a connecting flight.¿Dónde recojo mi equipaje?
Where do I collect my luggage?¿De qué puerta sale mi vuelo?
Which gate does my flight leave from?INTERACTIVE PRACTICEOpen the airport officer lab

Answer the real trip in one breath, then show the proof
Practice a truthful short answer, not a memorized story. Keep purpose, dates, accommodation, and onward travel visible so the conversation can move from speech to evidence.
Scenario 01 of 04
Answer the purpose and length of the real trip in two short facts
- OFFICER MAY ASK
¿Cuál es el motivo de su viaje y cuánto tiempo se va a quedar?
What is the purpose of your trip, and how long will you stay? - YOUR BRIEF ANSWER
Turismo. Me voy a quedar diez días.
Tourism. I am going to stay for ten days. - SHOW SUPPORTING DETAILS
Aquí está mi itinerario y mi boleto de salida.
Here are my itinerary and my ticket out of Mexico.
Replace tourism and ten days with the truth. The officer may ask different or additional questions; a practiced answer does not guarantee admission.
THE FOUR-FACT HANDOFF

Reviewed 22 August 2026. Mexico’s migration rules identify the information an officer may verify, including identity and immigration documents where applicable, purpose, normal residence, accommodation, stay length, activities, means of support, and onward transport. INM’s autonomous-filter guidance limits machine use by traveler, trip purpose, passport, age, and participating airport; availability and routing can change.
These are answer patterns, not a visa check, admission guarantee, legal advice, or fixed script. Verify nationality-specific requirements before travel and follow the current officer, signage, and airport route on arrival.

WHEN YOU LOSE THE THREAD
Recovery is part of the conversation
Ask for slower speech, repetition, or a moment to understand. That is successful communication—not failure.
FIELD USEField notes and official source
USE IT IN THE REAL MOMENT
Three field notes
- Keep the flight number, boarding pass, baggage tag, and destination visible rather than relying on pronunciation alone.
- Ask for one checkpoint at a time: immigration, baggage claim, connection, or gate.
- Airport and immigration procedures can change. Use this guide for communication, then follow current official signs and staff instructions.
COMMON QUESTIONSQuestions before you use the phrase
COMMON QUESTIONS
Before you need the phrase
What might a Mexican immigration officer ask a tourist?
Questions can vary. Current rules allow the officer to verify facts such as identity and immigration documents where applicable, trip purpose, normal residence, accommodation, stay length, activities, means of support, and onward transport. Answer truthfully and briefly, then show the relevant document if requested.
How do I ask whether to use an immigration machine or speak to an officer?
Ask “¿Debo usar la máquina o hablar con un agente de migración?” Eligibility and availability vary by traveler and airport, so use current INM signage and staff rather than assuming that the machine applies to you.
Can I rely on airport staff speaking English in Mexico?
No. Ask “¿Habla inglés?” but keep the flight, accommodation, and entry details available offline. If English is unavailable, ask the person to write or point to what is needed and follow the appropriate official or service desk.
