CARDS, CASH, AND ATMS
Payment Spanish for Mexico: confirm the total before you tap
Payment pressure makes small labels carry large consequences. Put the total on the terminal, identify the currency and any fee, and keep a line ready for pausing or changing the payment method.
THE MOMENT
Separate the amount from the decision
Do not process a fast explanation and a money choice at the same time. First make the amount and currency visible. Then read any fee or conversion offer before you choose an action.
FOUR LINES TO CARRY
Say it, know it, hear it
¿Me trae la terminal, por favor?
Could you bring me the card terminal, please?¿Me puede mostrar el total antes de cobrar?
Could you show me the total before charging me?¿Tiene cambio para este billete?

Scenario 01 of 05
Bring the amount onto the terminal before the charge
- YOUR REQUEST
¿Me trae la terminal, por favor?
Could you bring me the card terminal, please? - WHAT MAY COME BACK
Sí. El total es de quinientos veinte pesos.
Yes. The total is five hundred twenty pesos. - BEFORE YOU PAY
¿Me puede mostrar el total antes de cobrar, por favor?
Could you show me the total before charging me, please?
Match the amount and MXN currency on the terminal to the bill before you approve the payment.
BEFORE YOU CONFIRM
Three details must be visible
- 01Amount and currency
- 02Exchange rate and any markup
- 03The action you are choosing
Visa says a dynamic-currency-conversion offer should disclose both currency amounts, the exchange rate, and any added fee or markup, and must leave the choice to the cardholder. Card and ATM charges vary, so check your issuer’s current terms before travel. This page teaches the language and the pause points; it does not choose a financial product or transaction for you.

WHEN YOU LOSE THE THREAD
Recovery is part of the conversation
Ask for slower speech, repetition, or a moment to understand. That is successful communication—not failure.
FIELD USEField notes and official source
USE IT IN THE REAL MOMENT
Three field notes
- Check the total and currency on the terminal or ATM screen before approving anything; the spoken number is not enough.
- For a conversion offer, read both currency amounts, the exchange rate, and any markup. Compare the disclosed cost with your card issuer’s current terms.
- Prepare an alternate payment method and the issuer’s official contact route before travel; a decline message does not explain why the card failed.
COMMON QUESTIONSQuestions before you use the phrase
COMMON QUESTIONS
Before you need the phrase
How do I ask for the card terminal in Mexico?
Say “¿Me trae la terminal, por favor?” Then ask to see the total before the charge and match the amount and currency to the bill.
How do I ask whether someone has change for a large bill?
Use “¿Tiene cambio para este billete?” while showing the note. Confirm the price and count the returned change before leaving.
What should I look for on a Spanish ATM conversion screen?
Find the withdrawal amount, both currencies when conversion is offered, tipo de cambio (exchange rate), comisión (fee), importe total (total amount), and the exact accept, decline, continue, or cancel action. If the choice is unclear, cancel before confirming and check your issuer’s current terms.
